Introductory Level Classes

Sew Like a Pro 1 SXW400

Let’s Drape! SXP190

In this introductory sewing class, you'll learn how to: use an industrial sewing machine, complete 3 clean seam finishes, edit an inclusive unisex casual pants pattern, practice using an overlock machine, and walk away with a custom fit pant. This is the only course listed on this site where I am not the only instructor - close to the start date, my name will be attached to my section. Before that occurs, feel free to reach out at mallorie_dunn@fitnyc.edu to inquire as to which section is mine.
In this introductory draping class, you'll learn all the basics of how to create patterns by manipulating non-stretch fabric around a dress form. There is no sewing in this course. You will walk away with multiple basic and one creative pattern of your own design, that can be used for sewing at home.

Intermediate Level Classes

Sew Like a Pro 2

Design and Sew with Stretch Fabrics

In this intermediate sewing class, you will learn: zipper installation, patch pockets, facing + collars, and two hand sewing stitches. You'll walk away with a custom fit, unisex, inclusively sized jacket.
In this intermediate draping + sewing class, you'll learn how to both drape and sew with stretch fabrics. We begin with multiple draping projects. Move onto stretch sewing demos. And then you drape and sew a creative piece of your own design. You'll use both overlock and coverstitch industrial machines in this class.

Intermediate/Advanced Level Classes

Sewing with Silky Fabrics

Sample Creation and Start Up Essentials

Inclusive Fashion Patternmaking

A 2 session mini course covering all things silky, slippery fabrics. Learn about them, how to cut them, how to work with them, and how to finish them.
A hybrid business + design class. This is a course for makers who want to sell their items. First two days are business lectures, third is a field trip to NYC's garment district, and then for the remainder of the class, you make a sample you'd want to sell. Final class is a presentation of said sample alongside a mini business plan.
Want your clothing to actually fit? Yourself and/or others? This is the class that teaches you how. Edit your patterns to fit *any* body. And learn about the realities of consumer sizing.

Patternmaking From Existing Garments

A 3 session mini course that covers all things fabric. What is it? How do I pick it? How much do I need? How do I work with it? 1st class - a lecture. 2nd - a visit to the FIT museum study rooms. 3rd - a sewing workshop.
Copy Your Clothes! Make patterns from your existing garements *without* taking them apart. In this course, you'll learn to copy clothing items, not further edit them. Take SXP185 to expand on the knowledge you learn here.
