Fashion and Beauty Are for Everyone

Wednesday night I had the amazing privilege and honor to attend a panel discussion, A Culture of Extraordinary, hosted by The Li.st. The panel included the ever fabulous Stacy London, Marie Claire’s Lea Goldman, Vixxenn’s Nicole Sanchez, and my friend Julie Sygiel of Dear Kate. I have posted a bit on social media about my wonderful interaction with Stacy London after the panel discussion but I want to mention something that happened mid discussion when I posed a question to the ladies. Three “Real People” Does Not Equal Body Positivity

It’s Fashion Week – as I’m sure you all know – and once again DKNY has used “real” people in their runway presentation. Can Burlesque Be Body Positive?

As a woman (especially in my early 20’s) I am constantly being bombarded with images of how my body is “supposed” to look and how it is “acceptable” to behave and dress. On the street I get harassed daily by strangers telling me to smile or commenting on my appearance and making sexual remarks. When I don’t respond positively to these catcalls, I get called a “slut” or “bitch” or other terms deemed negative and designed to hurt women. Through burlesque I control my appearance and sexuality in front of an audience, a luxury I should have every day. It…
